Today, I read about a company called IUniverse in the Writer’s Chronicle. I’m wondering if this might be an easier way to publish my novel. Apparently, they print full color books and make them available through over 25,000 booksellers. Also, their contracts are non-exclusive, so I’d be free to publish the novel with a larger publisher later. I’d be interested to know what other fiction writers think about such a company.
Well . . . this weekend I read at the Baton Rouge Gallery. It reminded me of how much I love reading. The poems seem so one dimensional on the page. I wonder if I should put together a CD of my work to sell at readings. Seems to have worked for Billy Collins.
StorySouth, an online journal of literature, has published the first chapter of my new novel. You can read it here:

Well . . . thankfully Hurricane Dennis missed us. Me and my wife stayed glued to the television for most of the weekend, watching journalists being blown around. Some of these reporters are truly dedicated to their jobs. I was particularly impressed with Anderson Cooper of CNN. Continually, throughout the day, he reported on the storm despite the fact that a large Ramada sign, as well as other debris, was blowing past him. Now that’s dedication!

More and more, I’m beginning to question the legitimacy of book contests. Are they simply taking money from poets only to award the book prize to a friend or colleague? According to Foetry.com, the answer is yes. Foetry.com claims that more and more, “judges of book contests [ARE selecting] their students, friends, and even their lovers.†Moreover, the site lists a variety of established poets who have a history of such behavior. This really concerns me because I’ve spent a great deal of money on contests over the years. For a while now, I’ve wondered if such nepotism explains why I haven’t published a book length ms at this point. Other times, I think I’m simply a disgruntled poet blaming nepotism for the fact that I haven’t landed a book deal
