Katrina Frustration

Filed under: Main — Chris @ 6:59 pm

For five months now, I’ve watched the federal government promise funds that New Orleans residents desperately need. To say the least, it’s very disheartening. New Orleans (as of today’s date) has not received one red cent from the federal government. The speed at which the federal government has responded to this disaster is simply unacceptable. Food and water arrived only two days after the tsunami disaster. Yet, New Orleans is still waiting. I saw a CNN story last night that talked about the thousands of trailers that FEMA has in Arkansas. They are paying over $25,000 per month for the trailers, yet not one has been delivered to the affected areas. And, as if this wasn’t enough, FEMA officials stated that the reason they have not sent the trailers to New Orleans is because the trailers are not fit for flood plains. Yes, you heard correctly. The trailers FEMA purchased for areas flooded by, in some cases, more that fiftteen feet of water, are not fit to reside in flooded areas. I wonder, if this disaster would have occurred in San Francisco, or Manhattan, for that matter, if the response would be this ridiculously incompetent.
